News from the front

Hopefully you managed to catch Bill McKibben on one of his speaking tours around Australia, New Zealand or Fiji recently!

The students at Fossil Free ANU have recently been holed up with exams and end-of-semester assessments, but lots has been happening lately. A couple of highlights, in no particular order:

  • Activists from the Lock the Gate Alliance did a non-violent direct action at Parliament House on June 21st (fantastic photos up here) as a part of their ‘Call to Country‘ campaign
  • Anti-wind energy protests in Canberra on June 18th were met with a counter-rally, organised by GetUp! and Friends of the Earth, with news sources claiming that the anti-renewable folk were outnumbered almost 10-to-1. Incredible!
  • The Australian Climate Commission released a report calling for immediate action against climate change
  • The Australian Greens call on the Australian Future Fund to divest from fossil fuels

And, of course, beautiful photos of Bill McKibben at ANU – credits to Adam Thomas for the flickr set!

Finally, our numbers are growing! If haven’t already signed our petition (link on the right), it’ll take only 2 seconds of your time and we can show ANU some serious, level-headed and environmentally conscious pressure.

Bill McKibben at ANU

Bill McKibben’s ‘Do the Maths’ tour is hitting ANU tonight! Check out the Facebook event page, if you haven’t already.

For the non-Facebook inclined, event details are:

ImageDate: Wednesday, June 5th 2013

Time: 7.30pm – 9.00pm

Location: Manning Clarke Centre Theatre 1, ANU

Tickets have sold out, but we’re sure the friendly organisers will be able to sort something out if you do show up.

Alternatively, McKibben’s organisation 350.org has released a free 45-minute long documentary on the global climate change movement and divesting from the fossil fuel industry, viewable here. It’s a compelling and incredibly well-crafted watch.

Also, don’t forget to sign our petition to get ANU out of fossil fuels here!
